Ana’s Travel Tips: Packing Light

When traveling for work, I carry a backpack for personal items. My rolling suitcase is actually a ThinkTank, which is a photography gear-only bag. Because of this, I’ve learned to travel light. Here are my travel tips:

1. Versatile pieces – Black/blue/white long-sleeve and short sleeve tops can go with almost anything. I also bring one dress and one blouse/button down if I’m attending events (or slacks if it’s cold). For shoes, I try to only bring two pairs.
2. Get creative – Airlines have gotten really strict on how much you can/cannot bring and stuffing everything into a backpack can be challenging. If you have some left over items, bring them in a small shopping bag (like the brown paper ones with handles). I usually use these to bring snacks or gifts/souvenirs.
3. Rethink the toiletries – If you’re visiting a close friend or relative, ask them in advance if they’re comfortable sharing some of toiletry items (shampoo/conditioner, face wipes, cotton swabs, hairdryer). It’ll save you lots of space.
4. Use packing cubes – They are surprisingly helpful. I use these and it saves time from packing/unpacking your entire bag when looking for one item. It also helps size things down.
