Tips for a Successful Political Campaign Photo Session

After photographing many federal and state-wide political campaigns, I have gathered a list of five tips that are beneficial to a successful for a campaign photo session.

1. Having a thorough timeline – A detailed timeline is critical to the session date. Your timeline should include travel times between locations, hair and makeup, number of volunteers expected during each portion of the day, breaks for the candidate, and back up locations in case of inclement weather or unexpected events.
2. Confirming all outfits – Maximizing looks during a session is key to ensuring variety! I recommend trying on all outfits before each session and figuring out which looks best with each portion of the day. I have an in-depth blog post on what to wear to your campaign photo session.
3. Point of Contact – Having a trusty person to help make final decisions on behalf of the campaign during a photo session is extremely helpful. As I’m photographing, I have an iPad where clients can review their photos live. This POC person can double check photos and approve them before moving to the next location. They can be an extra set of eyes on the candidate and ensure their outfit choices look good on-site.
4. Prepping volunteers – Having excited and willing volunteers on a photo session allows for the photographs to show as genuine. Campaigns should inform volunteers of their roles and expectations and most importantly, what to wear! They should arrive with various outfits of solid colors, minimal patterns, and minimal logos.
