Tips for a Wedding Toast
I feel that some of the most memorable moments during a wedding are the sweet words and stories that are told about the couple. I’ve heard a few hundred toasts and there are a few things that I wish the speaker had known before giving the speech. So if you or someone you know is giving a toast soon, send these tips their way!
- Tell us who you are and how you know the couple. A lot of guests at weddings haven’t met each other, so introduce yourself and tell us how you met the couple and/or your relationship to them!
- Use your notes. It is totally acceptable to use notes during a speech. Have them printed out prior to the wedding. Avoid using your phone–it makes you look unprepared.
- Practice holding the mic. You’ll most likely hold a microphone in one hand and your notes on the other. I’ve been to weddings where we simply can’t hear the person giving the toast because they kept moving the mic around as they made hand gestures.
- Stand near the couple. It’s best to stand near the couple and face them. That way they can see you and guests can too. Avoid standing by the DJ table or standing behind the couple.
- Remember to raise your glass. It’s a toast after all! At the end of your speech, have everyone raise their glass and celebrate the newlyweds.
