As we move to more virtual meetings, there are a few things we should keep in mind when networking online or attending business meetings.
-
- Dress like you would in person – Your brand matters regardless of where you are. Show up like you would for an in-person meeting. If that means putting on a suit, putting on make up, doing your hair, etc., then do that. If you wouldn’t wear something to a business meeting, don’t wear it to your online one.
- Check your background – What does your current background say about you as a business person? Ideally, a blank wall or something that fits your brand is best. If you don’t have a background that seems adequate, simply use a virtual one or create one with your brand logo.
- Mute yourself – As a courtesy to others, mute yourself whenever you are not speaking. Your background noise gets picked up by the web portal and becomes distracting to others.
- Show up on time – Just like you would for any meeting in person, showing up on time is important. In more casual gatherings, if you must be tardy, you can try to log in on time, mute, and turn off your camera. The attendees will see that you are at least “there” and will engage when ready. But it’s always best to be on time.
- Be ready to participate – Networking events thrive on participation. Remember that the goal is for others to remember you and your organization, so speak up and stay engaged.
Hope this helps!
