I love it when a bar mitzvah has a theme that goes through the entire day. Max’s big day started with bimah portraits with his family at Temple Shalom in Silver Spring, MD. The day continued with a basketball themed party and included a very special guest: the Washington Wizard’s G-Wiz mascot! It was so awesome having him there to enjoy the games with the kids. There were basketball cake pops and actual basketballs for the kids to take home as souvenirs!

Bimah Portraits

B’nai mitzvahs begin with posed portraits on the bimah. Because synagogues do not allow photography during the service, we take photos during the rehearsal time or at another time that works with the synagogue and the family. This time allows us to get all the “must have” photos like the mitzvah with the torah, detail photos of family heirlooms, and a variety of family groupings.

Extended Family Portraits

Before the celebration, most families choose to take extended family portraits. Sometimes this is right before the service or right before the celebration at the celebration location. This allows for family who have traveled from out of town to be formally photographed. It’s a special time to gather those groupings of aunts, cousins, etc.

Celebration

This is the part kids have been waiting for! During this time, I focus on photographing details, candids, and all the activities that happen during the celebration. This includes speeches, blessings, candle lighting ceremony, and the hora.
