On the Campaign Trail with Sec. Julián Castro: Liberty & Justice

The Liberty and Justice event held by the Iowa Democrats is one of the largest political events during the cycle. I was tasked with photographing Secretary Julián Castro during this event for his presidential campaign.

The event felt less of a political one and more of a sporting event. The arena was packed, there were signs for candidates everywhere, and sections would break out into cheers.

 

Secretary Castro took a moment to take it all in while the staff was finalizing some movements.

 

Remember I said Secretary Castro always greets those working the event? This day was no different. In addition to greeting supporters, he also greeted this gentleman who was selling beverages.

 

After making our way through the arena, Secretary Castro settled into the waiting room with his Personal Aide Billy Czerwinski and Press Secretary Sawyer Hackett. When the team was ready, he was briefed and got himself ready to take the stage.

 

Below is one of my favorite accidental moments from the day. I aimed my camera towards the stage to test the light. At the same time, Senator Michael Bennet from Colorado, was walking out.

 

As we left the stage, I sped right through the curtains. Once I turned around, I realized that Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota was being greeted by Secretary Castro.

 

We were walking quickly to leave the building as a gentleman working catering for the event rushed over to Secretary Castro. “I heard you and I thought you were Barack Obama! You sound just like him!” Secretary Castro took the time to listen to his concerns and spoke about how he’d address them as president.
